Labradoodle grooming in Lowell, MA
Three coats, three completely different jobs
Labradoodles vary more than any other Doodle cross, and the difference is not cosmetic. Two Labradoodles from the same litter can need opposite grooming plans, so the first thing we do is work out which coat is actually in front of us.
Fleece
Soft, wavy, silky to the touch. The most common and the most manageable, but it still needs combing to the skin, because it holds every hair it sheds.
Wool
Dense curls, closest to the Poodle. Looks fantastic and mats the fastest of the three. Needs the shortest interval between grooms.
Hair
Closest to the Labrador. Straighter, sheds a little, lowest maintenance, but often has a Labrador undercoat that needs de-shedding rather than cutting.
Australian Labradoodle
A separate line, usually fleece or wool, bred for consistency. Grooming follows the coat in front of us, not the paperwork.
The Labrador half changes the appointment
This is the part that gets missed. A Labradoodle with a hair or fleece coat often carries a Labrador style undercoat underneath, which sheds seasonally. Clipping that coat short does not stop the shedding, it just makes the loose hair shorter and harder to see. What it actually needs is a de-shedding bath and a full blow-out, the same as a double coated dog.
So the first appointment includes an honest read of the coat and a plan that matches it, instead of a default clip.

- Coat assessment: fleece, wool or hair, and whether there is an undercoat
- Line brushing or de-shedding, depending on what we find
- Bath and full blow-dry
- Scissored face, or a shorter working trim if you prefer
- Ears cleaned and plucked if needed
- Feet, sanitary areas and belly tidied
- Nails, with dremel finishing on request
- A brushing plan for the specific coat your dog has
Active dogs, New England trails
Labradoodles get walked hard around Greater Lowell, and a coat that never sheds is a coat that keeps everything it touches. Burrs, seeds, pond water and ticks all end up in it. After a swim, dry and comb the coat rather than letting it dry on its own, because a wet curl that dries untouched tightens as it goes.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which coat my Labradoodle has?
Feel it rather than look at it. Fleece is soft and wavy and slides through your fingers. Wool is dense, springy and holds its shape when you press it. Hair is straighter, coarser and leaves fur on your clothes. We will tell you at the first appointment.
Does clipping stop a Labradoodle from shedding?
No. If your dog has a Labrador style undercoat, clipping only makes the loose hair shorter. What removes it is a de-shedding bath and a full blow-out, which pulls the dead undercoat out instead of cutting it off.
How often does a Labradoodle need grooming?
Wool coats every four to six weeks. Fleece coats every six weeks. Hair coats can stretch to eight weeks with a de-shedding bath in between. Brushing at home is what decides whether you stay in that range.
Do you groom Australian Labradoodles?
Yes. They are usually fleece or wool. We groom to the coat we can feel rather than to the label on the pedigree, because that is what determines the technique.
