Why Goldendoodles are harder than they look
The Golden Retriever side gives volume and a soft, slightly oily coat. The Poodle side gives curl and a coat that does not shed out. Together they produce something genuinely difficult: a thick coat that holds every hair it grows, right at the density where mats form fastest.
Owners usually notice the problem in one of three places first: behind the ears, under the harness line, and on the back legs where the dog sits.
The Goldendoodle grooming schedule that works
Every 4 to 6 weeks
A full groom. This is not a suggestion for a Goldendoodle in a longer cut, it is the interval that keeps the coat brushable.
2 to 3 times a week
Comb to the skin, section by section. Ten minutes done properly beats an hour of brushing the surface.
Every walk in autumn
Check for burrs and seeds. A Goldendoodle coat collects everything on a New England trail and holds onto it.
After every swim
Dry and comb out. A wet curly coat that dries on its own tightens into mats as it goes.
Styles we cut most
- Teddy bear. Rounded face, body taken to an even length. The classic, and the one most owners have in mind.
- Summer short. Same shape, shorter body, easier to maintain through humid months and tick season.
- Longer legs, shorter body. Keeps the Doodle silhouette while cutting brushing time roughly in half.
- Puppy trim. A short, gentle first haircut that gets a young dog used to clippers and the dryer.
- Line brushing to the skin before the bath
- Bath, conditioner and a full blow-dry to set the curl
- Scissored face and legs
- Ears cleaned and plucked if needed
- Feet and sanitary areas tidied
- Nails, with dremel finishing on request
The coat change nobody warns you about
Somewhere between eight and fourteen months your Goldendoodle's puppy coat is replaced by the adult coat. The old hair does not fall out, it tangles into the new growth, and a dog that never had a mat suddenly has them everywhere. Brush more during this window, not less, and shorten the gap between appointments until it is over.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a Goldendoodle be groomed?
Every four to six weeks for a full groom, with combing to the skin two or three times a week in between. Goldendoodles kept in a longer coat are at the demanding end of that range, not the relaxed end.
What is a teddy bear cut?
A rounded, scissored face with the muzzle left full, and the body taken to an even length. It is the most requested Goldendoodle style and it needs a coat in good condition, because the shape comes from healthy hair, not from clippers.
My Goldendoodle suddenly started matting everywhere. Why?
Most likely the coat change, which happens between eight and fourteen months. The puppy coat does not fall out, it tangles into the adult coat. Brush more often during those months and shorten the gap between grooms until it settles.
Will you shave my Goldendoodle?
Only if the mats are flat against the skin and brushing them out would hurt the dog. We show you the areas and explain the options before we start. If the coat is in good condition we keep the length you want.
