Long coats mat in places you cannot see
The top coat of a long haired cat can look perfect while the layer underneath is already locked together. Mats start where fur rubs: behind the front legs, in the armpits, along the belly, at the base of the tail and under a collar. By the time you can see them from above, they have usually been there for weeks.
This matters more than it sounds. A tight mat pulls the skin every time the cat moves, and cats stop grooming an area that hurts, which makes the mat grow. It is a loop that gets worse on its own.

When brushing is no longer the answer
There is a point where a mat cannot be brushed out without hurting the cat, and pretending otherwise is how cats get skin tears. If a mat lies flat against the skin, the safe route is to clip that area short and let it regrow healthy. We show you the areas first, explain what we would do and let you decide before anything happens.
We do not sedate, and that is a deliberate choice. It means some long haired cats need two shorter visits instead of one long one, and we would rather do that than push a cat past its limit.
Keeping the coat between appointments
- Brush under the top layer, not over it. A comb that reaches the skin tells you the truth.
- Check the five trouble spots weekly: armpits, behind the legs, belly, tail base, under the collar.
- Short sessions every day beat one long fight once a week.
- If your cat has stopped grooming its own back, book sooner rather than later. That is the earliest warning sign.

Do you groom Maine Coons?
Yes. Maine Coons are one of the long haired breeds we see most. The work is split into sections because of their size and the density of the coat, and the britches and chest ruff usually need the most attention.
Can you brush out mats instead of shaving?

Every six to eight weeks for most long haired cats, and sooner for seniors or overweight cats who cannot reach their own back. Between visits, comb under the top layer rather than over it.
Is the appointment stressful for the cat?
We work to make it not be. Quiet room, no dogs coming and going, small sections and breaks whenever the cat asks for one. If a cat has had enough, we stop and tell you what was completed rather than pushing.
